5161 A large 18th century north Italian carved and giltwood mirror with a simple rectangular moulded frame surmounted by a flamboyant pediment of carved scrolling architectural design applied with floral and foliate decoration. In the centre of the pediment a crest with a shallow relief carved profile portrait of a Roman emperor.

The whole frame gilded, with a very light layer of gesso over the carved walnut base. The central moulding on the rectangular frame with a “sandy” gilded finish. In a wonderfully untouched state with small areas of loss to the gilding revealing the confidently carved walnut surface beneath.

The original mercury gilded mirror plate with traces of surface overpainting of trailing vines on the glass. Even retaining its original hand wrought iron hanging bracket.
