Tokyo School Bronze
6049 A fine quality Japanese Meiji period Tokyo School bronze figure, depicting a young woman carrying a basket of shells.
The young woman dressed in traditional Japanese kimono, walking on a stylised seashore, carrying in her right hand a woven cane basket filled to the brim with clams and other shellfish, presumably collected along the seashore. Her left arm is raised to counterbalance the weight of the full basket, which pulls her to her right, her face displaying a sense of satisfaction at the successful gathering expedition and perhaps an anticipation of an upcoming seafood feast.
Note the wonderful attention to detail in this naturalistically modelled cast bronze - for example the young woman holds a piece of cloth in her right hand to protect it from the sharp basket handle.
Signed to the base with impressed signature. Original carved wood base included.
Circa 1880
58cm high, including wooden base.
