Bijin on the beach

Bijin on the beach
5944 A fine quality Japanese Meiji period Tokyo School bronze figure depicting a young woman (Bijin) walking along the beach, a rocky shoreline, into a stiff breeze, with the water lapping under the rocks beneath her. With her right hand she holds her headscarf from blowing away while her left arm carries a basket containing the shells (clams) she has been collecting. This wonderful subject matter of the young woman beach-combing while the wind causes her robes to dance around her, really captures a sense of environment and experience. There is a real sense of movement achieved by the artist which seems to transport us to share in the experience of the subject, walking the foreshore with the wind in our hair. Circa 1900
