Reclining Bijin

Reclining Bijin

A$0.00

5309 A beautiful quality Japanese Meiji period bronze figure depicting a reclining beauty or Bijin, with integrated bronze base and seperate carved wood base. Signed to the bronze base.

This sensitive and delicately finished bronze is both artistically and technically a superb example of Japanese Meiji period sculpture. It is also a very rare subject matter, the depiction of the nude figure was almost unheard of in Japanese art before the Meiji period and this subject matter displays the European influence on Japanese artists following their exposure to Classical, Renaissance and indeed contemporary sculpture in late 19th and early 20th century Europe. In many ways, it is a depiction of Venus in the classical tradition.

Meiji Period circa 1900
