A rare 15th century gothic oak chest. German, circa 1450-1500.

Constructed in boarded form, each side joined to the other with timber pegs. The top, sides and backs without carved decoration, the facade with relief carved gothic tracery consisting mainly of arched panels and two circular motifs. Retaining the original wrought iron handles to each end and some of the original iron strap work and lock plate, and with a good deep crust finish. Standing on heavily wormed but original sledge feet.

While not overtly ecclesiastical, the designs in the roundels could be interpreted as representing the Trinity on one side and the cross on the other. It is possible that a chest such as this was used to house the valuable vestments belonging to a clergyman, or the precious metalware used in the church.
