Regency library bookcase

Regency library bookcase

A fine and unusual Regency mahogany and ormolu mounted bookcase, in the French Empire taste. Having an ogee moulded cornice above a gilt bronze mount, cast with an Assyrian mask flanked by a pair of gryphon, above three astragal glazed doors and then three paneled and anthemion mounted cupboard doors, the whole framed with reeded pilasters with gilt bronze rosettes and standing on reeded tapering legs.

Circa 1815.

This elegant and sophisticated bookcase is unusual both for its strong influence from French Empire design and also for its very unusual configuration of sliding doors. On both the upper and lower sections, only the right hand door is locked. When the right hand doors are opened, the central doors slide to the right simultaneously “unlocking” the left hand doors.
